Robotic Surgery Recovery Guides

Procedure-specific recovery timelines, diet progression, activity restrictions, wound care, and red flags โ€” so you know exactly what to expect.

โœ… Quick Answer

Most robotic surgery patients are home in 1โ€“3 days, back to desk work in 1โ€“2 weeks, and fully active in 3โ€“6 weeks. This compares to 4โ€“6 weeks hospitalisation + 3 months recovery for open surgery equivalents.

General Recovery Guidelines

Week 1

  • Rest but gentle walking encouraged from day 1 โ€” prevents blood clots
  • Soft diet, plenty of fluids
  • Pain managed with oral medication โ€” should be mild-moderate
  • Wound care: keep dressings dry and intact

Weeks 2โ€“4

  • Gradually increase activity โ€” short walks getting longer each day
  • No heavy lifting (>5 kg) until surgeon clears you
  • Normal diet re-established by week 2 for most procedures
  • Driving: not until pain-free and off strong analgesia (usually 2โ€“3 weeks)

Red Flags โ€” Call Your Surgeon Immediately If:

  • Fever >38.5ยฐC (101ยฐF)
  • Wound red, warm, discharging pus, or gaping
  • Severe abdominal pain (worse than expected)
  • Jaundice (yellow skin/eyes)
  • Inability to pass urine or open bowels beyond 3 days
  • Calf pain, swelling, or breathlessness (DVT/PE)

Short flights (under 2 hours): usually after 1โ€“2 weeks. Long-haul: wait 4โ€“6 weeks and discuss with your surgeon. DVT risk is elevated post-operatively โ€” compression stockings and staying hydrated are essential.

Walking immediately. Light exercise (yoga, swimming): 3โ€“4 weeks. Gym/heavy lifting: 6โ€“8 weeks. Always get clearance from your surgeon first.

Start with clear liquids (water, coconut water, dal water). Progress to soft foods (idli, curd, khichdi). Normal diet by day 3โ€“7. Avoid spicy, fried, or fibre-heavy foods for 2 weeks.
